In 2014, the Ministry of Education of Belarus, by direct instruction of the President of the country, developed criteria for compiling a rating of higher education institutions. One of the goals of compiling such a rating was to determine the potential of students. For the rating, both generally accepted international criteria and national ones based on the specifics of education in Belarus were taken. Based on these criteria, we present in a short review the best higher education institutions of the Republic of Belarus in recent years.

Belarusian State University
The ranking of universities of the republic is headed by the famous BSU, which first opened its doors to students in October 1921.
Today's modern and creative university has 20 faculties, as well as 4 research institutes and many laboratories and research sites.
In the world ranking presented by the Spanish company, BSU takes an honorable fourth place among the best educational institutions in the post-Soviet space.

Belarusian National Technical University
After the revolution and the tragic events of World War I, Belarus needed highly qualified personnel capable of restoring the destroyed economy of the republic.
In that difficult situation of the outbreak of the Civil War, in 1920 the Belarusian Technical Institute began its work in the city of Minsk, in 2002 it was transformed into the BNTU.
The university has a developed infrastructure and scientific and technical base, and trains specialists in more than 30 areas. And the BNTU library is unique in that it is one of the oldest in the republic.

Minsk State Linguistic University
Linguistic universities that train teachers and translators are headed by the Moscow State Linguistic University, previously called the Minsk State Pedagogical Institute of Foreign Languages.
It was founded three years after the war in 1948, and already in the early 50s the first teaching staff went to the country's schools. One of the few universities where students received specialization in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Internal Affairs, and the Security Service.

Belarusian State Medical University
Medical universities of Belarus are widely represented in the country, but BSMU, founded in 1930, is the leader among them. Universities of Minsk, including medical, have become the basis for the formation of the state.
The university can rightfully be proud of its graduates and the teaching staff, which for many years has been preparing highly qualified medical personnel and conducting successful scientific work.
It is noteworthy that during the war years the Belarusian State Medical University was evacuated to Yaroslavl, and became the beginning of the foundation of a similar educational institution in this ancient Russian city.

Grodno State University named after Yankee Kupala
In 1940, in the city of Grodno, teaching staff began to train at the Grodno Teachers' Institute, which was later transformed into a wide-profile state educational institution.
In the 60s of the twentieth century, GSU became the leading scientific center of the republic, and its graduates could continue their studies in graduate school and engage in research work at the university.
In the early 2000s, colleges and gymnasiums were included in the university system, creating a unique educational complex of lifelong learning.

Vitebsk State Order of Friendship of Peoples Medical University
One of the oldest universities in the city of Vitebsk was founded in 1934, and today it rightfully occupies a leading position in the list, which includes the best Belarusian universities.
At the end of the 50s, VSMU moved to new buildings, and today it is a whole complex of modern educational buildings, hospitals, laboratories and, importantly, comfortable hostels for students and graduate students.
It is not in vain that the university bears the name of Friendship of Peoples, because on its basis a department is opened in which only students from other countries study. These are mainly states of the near abroad, Asia and Eastern Europe.

Gomel State University named after Francis Skorina
The list continues with a unique modern university, founded in 1930, and training personnel in various fields of life. Particular attention is paid to the training of teachers and lawyers.
Legal universities, including the Skorina Gomel University, train specialists in accordance with the latest requirements, based on thoughtful educational programs.
Russian educational institutions work closely with the Belarusian university in the exchange of students, as well as in the development of joint study programs and research.

Brest State Technical University
Builders, architects, specialists of IT-technologies and other areas of the national economy come out of the university building. The building faculty is glorified throughout the country.
It was founded in 1966, and today it is a leading university for the training of technical personnel. The management managed to establish cooperation with leading engineering companies in the country where students undergo practical training.
For many years, the permanent rector of the BSTU has been Poyta Pyotr Stepanovich, who has done a lot to enhance the prestige of his institution.

Belarusian State Technological University
It began its activities in 1930 in Gomel and was then called the Forest Institute. Having returned from evacuation, the educational institution chose the city of Minsk as the place of its permanent residence.
About 15 thousand people work and study in classrooms, in laboratories and in departments, and, interestingly, BSTU manages to expand every year.
At one time, the famous Soviet historian Ivan Poluyan taught here, on the account of which there are many historical discoveries, as well as the preparation of 15 candidates of science and 2 doctors of history.

Grodno State Agrarian University
Belarus has always been considered the edge of forests, and was famous for its agricultural products, because it became natural to open here in 1951 an educational institution that trains personnel in the field of forestry and agriculture.
The faculty of veterinary medicine, as well as a number of other related specialties, is especially developed. The state has never saved on agricultural specialists, because the scholarship at the university is one of the highest in the country.

University of Civil Protection EMERCOM of Belarus

Belarusian State University of Transport
In 1953 BelGUT began to function, the main task of which was the training and education of transport and construction specialists. At one time, it was here that the distinguished railway faculty was opened, and today the university trains personnel in 50 different directions.

International University MITSO
In the system of prestigious educational institutions in Belarus, a special place belongs to the MITSO University, which for many years has been training highly qualified specialists in such a complex and delicate area as international relations.
For all the time of its work, highly qualified personnel have been trained here who have made a significant contribution to the development of the state and its international authority. It reports directly to the MA of the Federation of Trade Unions of Belarus.
It was the Minsk University that initiated the international Olympiad among law students “Youth for Peace”.
The rating did not include private educational institutions, but it should be rightly noted that there are not so many of them in Belarus, but they also compete with state universities.
